If your house is only a few decades old, replacing a bathroom faucet is an easy and relatively inexpensive weekend project. 1. Gather

Make sure you have an adjustable wrench, pair of pliers and basin wrench on hand. For materials, buy the new faucet of your choice that matches the hole arrangement of your existing sink (one, two or three holes). You also will need these materials:

  • Safety goggles or glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Plumber’s putty
  • Mineral spirits
  • A soft cloth or sink sponge
  • Work light
  • Plumber’s tape
  • Two flexible supply line extensions

Each faucet will have its unique construction, so consult the new faucet’s installation manual first. Anytime you are connecting water lines, use plumber’s tape to provide a watertight seal.

2. Inspect

Working beneath a sink may be cramped and crowded. Scope out the job site before beginning work. Find a handy place to put your work light. Make certain you know where the water supply valves are for both hot and cold lines.

3. Dry

Turn off the water supply for both lines. Open the faucet to let any water in the lines drain. Disconnect and discard the flexible supply lines from the supply valves, as you will be replacing them when you install the new faucet.

Remove the clamp attached to the lift rod for the stopper. Underneath the sink, loosen any nuts holding the faucet to the sink. A basin wrench can help with this if you cannot reach the nuts easily. Lift the old faucet straight up and discard it.

4. Clean

Use mineral spirits to remove old silicone or plumber’s putty from around the holes. This will make it easier to install your new faucet and will ensure that the faucet functions properly.

5. Install

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding plumber’s putty or silicone for sealing the faucet gasket. After you’ve completed those steps, insert the new faucet into the hole or holes. Use the basin wrench to thread washers and nuts onto the faucet from underneath the sink. Attach one end of each new flexible supply line extension to the hot and cold shanks.

Next, connect the new supply water line extensions to your supply valves. Attach the stopper’s new lift rod to your existing horizontal pivot rod extending out just above the P-trap.

Open the water supply valves slowly and check for leaks. Address any problems that may occur. Test the stopper.
