How to Make the Switch from Air Conditioning to Heater

Although this task may seem easy, make sure you are smart about the steps you take when you switch your HVAC unit from air conditioning to heater. These steps can help preserve the life and performance of your unit, ultimately saving you energy, prevent hvac issues, and save money.

Be Prepared for the Switch

As warm weather comes to end, it’s important to perform a seasonal shutdown on your A/C unit. This includes drying the drainage, cleaning the coils, and covering the unit to protect it throughout the winter.
Now, it’s time to fire up the furnace! You will want to fire this up before it gets cold. The sooner the better – in case you experience an unexpected problem.

Finally: How To Switch From AC To Heat

First, adjust your thermostat to your desired temperature, then switch your settings from “cool” to “heat”. You should hear the A/C fan turn off, and a separate “click” as the furnace ignites, and gas begins to flow into your heater. Give your unit about 30 seconds to achieve this. If your system keeps shutting down after this step, it is most likely because the furnace sensor could not detect the flame. To counter this, make sure the gas valve is open and providing the unit with gas. Then, make sure the thermocouple (flame rod) is clean, as it may have collected dust over the months. If your thermocouple is extremely dirty, use fine sandpaper to clean it and resolve the problem.
After cleaning your thermocouple, you may notice a distinct smell as dust and other matter is burned off. We suggest opening your windows and allowing proper ventilation so that the smell doesn’t absorb into your home.
