DIY: What To Use To Unclog Your Bathroom Sink

When it comes to unclogging a bathroom sink, you have a few options. The most common option is to use a plumber’s snake, or wire hanger, to reach in pull the clog out. On average, this process should only take 15 minutes. In order to properly do this, however, there are few things you must do before hand. The following steps will show you how to properly remove sink parts so you can effectively remove the clog and get your sink back in working order.

5 Bathroom Sink Unclogging Steps

  1. Remove the sink stopper, which is normally a round metal rod in the middle of the sink drain. Normally, the stopper will come right out. If it doesn’t, it is probably being held in place by a pivot rod. If this is the case, then you will need to loosen the pivot rod nut with pliers, which is located under the sink along the main pipe connected to the drain. Once you loosen the nut, you can pull out the pivot rod and remove the stopper.
  2. After you have removed the stopper, use a plumbing snake or wire hanger with a hook to fish out the clog in the drain.
  3. After you have removed the clog, test the drain by running water through it and making sure that the water drains properly.
  4. If you are happy with the results, replace the stopper, then the pivot rod. Make sure you tighten the pivot rod nut back on when you are done.
  5. Finally, run hot water down the drain to help finish the job. Double check underneath the sink to make sure there’s no water leaking out and the pivot rod nut is secure.

A Final Resort

If you still can’t get your sink to unclog using the aforementioned tips, you can always try to clear up the drain by removing the P-trap. After the P-trap is off, clean it out as best you can, then replace it. You will need a plumber’s wrench and thread tape (for putting the P-trap back on). Be warned, there will be a foul odor coming from the drain and P-trap.
