Option 1: Baking Soda and Vinegar

Some homeowners have found baking soda and vinegar to be extremely successful in unclogging their sink drains, especially for simple clogs. This method is a safer alternative to using harmful drain cleaners that emit noxious fumes and are harsh on the metal within your drain system. Even better, using baking soda and vinegar prevents you from having to fish out the clog and deal with it face to face.

Here’s what you do:

Boil a pot of water. Set aside a cup of the hot water and pour the rest down the clogged drain.

Immediately after doing this, pour 1/3 cup of baking soda into the drain and let it sit for at least five minutes.

While you wait, mix a cup of vinegar into the cup of hot water you set aside. After the five minutes, pour the vinegar mixture down the drain and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. You should notice the mixture start to fizz.

After the 20 minutes, boil another pot of water and dump it down the drain.

Option 2: The Wire Hanger

One of the oldest tricks in the book is using a wire hanger to fish out a clog. All you have to do is unwind the wire hanger, beginning at the neck of the hanger. Then, straighten out the wire as much as you can but leave the hook. Now, all you have to do is remove the cover on the drain and insert the wire hanger into the drain, hook first. Then, just pull the hook up and down a few times, or until you catch the clog. Pull the wire out and quickly dispose of that nasty clog. That’s it!

Option 3: The Wet/Dry Vacuum

This option may be more effective for tough clogs. All you need is a wet-dry vacuum. Some wet dry vacuums even come with an attachment that’s made for clog cleaning. Depending on the make and model of your wet dry vac, you will need to look up specific instructions for your particular vacuum. In general, all you have to do is insert the attachment on the hose and place it over the drain to help remove the clog.
