5 Tips for Improving Indoor Air Quality

5 Tips for Improving Indoor Air Quality

Phoenix summers are notorious for their sweltering heat, but did you know about the poor air quality as well? The Phoenix Metro Area has some of the worst outdoor air quality in the country. This can be especially harmful to people with asthma and other respiratory issues.  The dangers of poor air quality are very serious – one third of deaths from stroke, lung cancer, and heart disease are due to air pollution. The air quality is worse in the summer, which is also when people spend the majority of time indoors. However, this doesn’t mean you are safe from the air pollution if you are not taking the right precautions to ensure that your indoor air quality is maintained. Follow these 5 tips to improve the air quality in your home for you and your family.

Don’t Smoke Inside

This one may seem like a no-brainer, but there are many people out there who don’t know how much smoking inside can affect the air quality in their home. Second hand smoke lingers for up to 5 hours after your last cigarette. So if you are smoking in your home constantly, there is always second hand smoke! Smoking inside can put your loved ones at risk for asthma, heart disease, respiratory infections, and the list goes on. The ideal solution for this would be to quit smoking altogether. However, that is much easier said than done. So an easy solution for this: take it outside!

Change Your A/C Filter

Most homeowners know that regularly changing your A/C filter is important for the maintenance of your unit. But many don’t know that changing your filters is just as important for ensuring healthy indoor air quality. Dirty filters can become contaminated with fungus and allergens which, if the filter is not changed out, can be spread throughout your house. ACE recommends you replace your filter every 3 months. Changing your filter is also part of proper maintenance for your system. A dirty, clogged up filter can lead to unnecessary wear and tear. Ignore it long enough, and you can drastically shorten the life of your unit.

Open the Windows

It’s THAT simple! This is especially important when cooking, cleaning, or using chemicals inside the home. This may seem wasteful in the hot summer days, but all it takes is a few minutes of fresh air to let any indoor pollutants out.  You can even speed up the process by setting a fan by the open window.

Clean for Health, Not Just Appearance

Just because your house looks clean – the sheets are folded, the dishes are washed, the garbage is taken out, and it smells nice – doesn’t mean it is rid of the many harmful pollutants that could be in your home. Having a regular routine of dusting, vacuuming, and mopping will greatly reduce the amount of dust and allergens that accumulate in your home throughout the week. ACE recommends you go through your cleaning process twice a week.
